Erzgebirgskreis – Fairytale mountain landscapes and living cultural heritage
The Erzgebirgskreis (Ore Mountains District), located in the Free State of Saxony along the German-Czech border, is one of Germany’s most magical, culturally unique and visually stunning regions. Deeply linked to its silver mining industry and known for its fairytale winter landscapes, it is a premier destination for travelers looking to slow down and immerse themselves in nature and tradition.
History: The Silver Rush and the Magic of Trees
The Erzgebirgskreis’ identity was forged underground. In the 12th century, the discovery of massive silver deposits triggered a medieval “Silver Rush” (Berggeschrey), which attracted thousands of miners and settlers to the region. Towns such as Annaberg-Buchholz and Marienberg quickly grew into wealthy economic powerhouses.
When the silver mines began to dry up centuries later, the resilient locals switched from mining to forestry and handicrafts. This shift gave rise to the region’s world-famous wooden toy industry. Today, the Erzgebirge/Krušnohorí mining region is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrating both its intact underground industrial monuments and the vibrant culture that grew from them.
